For many years, the Navel Academy was known for producing the most elaborate and professional show in the state. But due to the economic situation here in Michigan, participation has declined and we no longer have the means to support an annual stage production of a caliber that we would be proud of. For many of our students, it has become increasingly difficult to make the commitment upfront, both in time and cost. And we appreciate their loyalty and dedication to continue on with their classes, despite these difficult times. Beginner level classes remain focused on basic skills and technique throughout the year. Because dance is a performing art by definition, every student should learn how to apply their technique in the context of choreography. So even at the beginner level, steps are organized into short practice routines. Every six weeks, a new beginner session commences, and new steps are introduced which meet the median skill level of the group. There will always be a diversity of natural ability and experienced skill in every class session. So the beginner classes are appropriate for absolute beginners, as well as experienced dancers who want to achieve their personal best. Each year in the fall, when the new season begins, we also change the focus to a particular style of belly dance that is new and different for everyone. To give an idea, here’s an example of what’s been covered in the past … 2008 / 2009 . . . New Age / Goddess; sensual choreography to Lorena McKennitt’s “Marco Polo” 2009 / 2010 . . . The Elements (earth, air, fire, water); upbeat choreography with drum sections 2010 / 2011 . . . Contemporary Social (moves you can do on any dance floor) 2011 / 2012 . . . Classes on recess until fall. Intermediate and advanced students learn more intricate choreographies that sometimes include props and group maneuvers which require more skill and rehearsal. Their classes are performance oriented, and competent performers are invited to dance in various shows throughout the year. Another major difference is that beginner classes are structured to cover “X” amount of material within the 6-week session, which is a very short-term goal. Whereas intermediate and advanced classes work towards a long-term goal that will take an entire season to accomplish. So due to the skill level progression and long-term objectives, intermediate and advanced classes require the instructor’s permission to enroll. And currently, those classes now meet on a private basis at the instructor’s home studio. So you will not see them posted on the open class schedule. The level of difficulty for all classes is based on the median skill level for each individual classroom, so that every group can progress at its own pace. The class schedule designates a skill level for each section (Absolute Beginners, etc.), to serve as a guide for self-assessment. But even though care is taken to place students into classes based on their ability, every class ultimately ends up with a mix of skill levels in the room. And this cannot be prevented, as students will often enroll for the class that best fits their schedule, rather than their ability. So please don’t think of the skill level designation as a label, or as a limitation upon your own personal goals. Remember that it is our goal to accommodate the needs of all students and nurture their personal development. This is accomplished by teaching to the median skill level in every class, and encouraging individuals to set goals that are attainable as their own, personal best. The class schedule will also reflect that tuition rates vary depending on room capacity and location. Tuition is due in advance, or on the first day of each new session, and there are no refunds or make-ups for classes missed. |
