The Navel Academy specializes in oriental dance, or “belly dance,” as it is more commonly known. We are reputed to be Michigan’s leading educator in the art of oriental dance. Our primary goal is to preserve the integrity of the dance as an art form. In order to offer students a wider skill base, and to accommodate varying interests, both traditional and modern technique are covered. Classes incorporate historical, cultural and ethical aspects of the dance, together with basic technique and performance skills. Both on stage and off, great care is taken to always present our dance in the best possible light. Performances are appropriate for all audiences, and our purpose is to educate, as well as entertain.
The Navel Academy offers classes throughout Michigan, primarily in the Metro-Detroit area. The studio does not have a physical address of its own. All classes are taught by the original owner and artistic director, by independent contract at various locations. By making our classes more accessible to a larger community, our students are better served. If you would like to see classes available in your own community, please let us know. We will do our best to accommodate you.

We take great pride in the quality of all presentations, and receive accolades for our originality and professionalism. Students of all skill levels enjoy opportunities to perform throughout the year. Most of our shows are community events, free to the general public. Examples include nursing homes, book stores, libraries, and cultural functions. Each individual show is carefully planned and professionally presented. Great care is taken to ensure that content and presentation are well suited for the venue and audience. Therefore, in all cases, opportunities for students to perform are extended by invitation only, based on performance ability, repertoire and overall readiness. Students perform on a volunteer basis, and participation is always optional.
Some of our best students go on to pursue a professional dance career, and we support our talented starlets by referring them bookings for private engagements whenever possible (no bachelor parties or all-male audiences). In this capacity, we do not assume the role of a talent agency, and therefore, no “agency” or “finders” fee applies. We do not profit off the success of our students — we support them. And many of the local area instructors and performers are Navel Academy alumni. |
